Which AI Answer Surface Should You Prioritize First?

If your buyers already research vendors in AI answers, the first GEO question is not “optimize everything.” It is which answer surface deserves the first focused sprint: Google’s generative Search features, ChatGPT search, or Perplexity. For most SMEs and ecommerce brands, start with Google AI Overviews and AI Mode when buyers still discover you through Search and you need a measurable feedback loop—then expand to ChatGPT and Perplexity once crawl access and a prompt panel are in place.

What an “AI answer surface” actually is

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — generative experiences inside Google Search that can show supporting links. Google documents that these features rely on core Search systems, including retrieval grounded in the Search index and techniques such as query fan-out.

  • ChatGPT search — ChatGPT can search the web and may include citations or a Sources panel. OpenAI states that ranking uses multiple relevance factors and that placement is not guaranteed; eligibility for inclusion starts with allowing OAI-SearchBot and not blocking OpenAI’s published searchbot IPs at the host or CDN layer.

  • Perplexity — an answer engine that cites sources. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for surfacing sites in search results and Perplexity-User for user-triggered fetches; it recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges.

These surfaces are related but not interchangeable. A page that earns a supporting link in an AI Overview will not automatically appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity, and the reverse is also true.

The Surface Priority Scorecard

Score each surface from 0–2 on six factors (maximum 12). Run the scorecard separately for Google generative Search, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity.

How to interpret the totals

  • 9–12: Primary surface for the next 30 days.

  • 5–8: Secondary surface—fix crawl access and run a lightweight probe panel, but do not split the content roadmap yet.

  • 0–4: Park it. Revisit after the primary surface shows movement, or after buyer interviews change the discovery path.

If two surfaces tie, choose the one with the stronger measurement loop. Progress you cannot observe usually turns into vanity experimentation.

Worked example: multi-location clinic comparing three surfaces

Hypothetical scenario (not an Oasbit client case study): a multi-location physiotherapy clinic wants more evaluation-stage inquiries. Sales notes show most patients still Google providers; a minority of younger patients mention ChatGPT; almost nobody mentions Perplexity yet. Competitors appear in some AI Overviews for “best physio for runners near [city]” prompts. Search Console shows solid classic organic traffic but limited generative AI impressions on service pages.

Decision: make Google AI features the primary surface for 30 days. For ChatGPT, only unblock OAI-SearchBot / CDN friction and run a monthly 15-prompt panel. Park Perplexity until buyer research or competitor citations change.

What to do differently on each surface

If Google scores highest

  1. Confirm pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. Google’s AI features documentation states that supporting-link eligibility requires meeting Search technical requirements—no additional AI-only technical checklist.

  2. Strengthen non-commodity pages: unique experience, clear structure, and answers that go beyond generic tip lists. Google’s generative AI optimization guide calls this out as more important than AI-specific hacks.

  3. Prioritize the pages that already matter for conversions—service, comparison, and problem-solution pages—rather than inventing a parallel “AI content” silo. For page sequencing inside GEO, see which pages to optimize first for AI search.

  4. Measure with Search Console’s Generative AI performance report (impressions, pages, countries, devices) and keep classic Performance + Analytics conversion views in the same weekly review.

Also confirm you have not excluded the site from Search generative AI features via Search Console controls if inclusion is the goal.

If ChatGPT scores highest

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and verify the CDN/WAF allows OpenAI’s published searchbot IP ranges. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search help and crawler documentation treat this as the inclusion baseline, not a ranking guarantee.

  2. Publish crawlable, factual pages that can support vendor comparisons: clear service definitions, eligibility criteria, process steps, and updated dates.

  3. Build a fixed prompt panel (10–20 commercial questions) and re-run it monthly under the same conditions. Treat citations as directional evidence, then open the cited URLs to verify claims.

  4. Track referrals where available. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can append utm_source=chatgpt.com on referral URLs, which helps separate assistant-driven visits in analytics.

If Perplexity scores highest

  1. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and whitelist published IP ranges in the WAF if bot mitigation is aggressive. Perplexity documents that changes can take up to about 24 hours to reflect.

  2. Ensure key pages are available as readable HTML (not locked behind interstitial challenges for legitimate crawlers).

  3. Run the same commercial prompt panel you use for ChatGPT so surface comparisons stay apples-to-apples.

Common failure patterns

  • Optimizing every surface in week one. Split attention usually means no surface gets enough content depth or measurement discipline.

  • Chasing AI hacks while classic Search eligibility is broken. If Google cannot index or snippet your pages, AI Overviews and AI Mode supporting links are not a realistic near-term goal.

  • Confusing “ranking well” with “being recommended by assistants.” Those outcomes can diverge; see why a site can rank and still be invisible to AI assistants.

  • Treating one prompt screenshot as a KPI. Answers vary by location, personalization, model, and whether search was used. Use panels and native reports, not single anecdotes.

  • Assuming special AI files are required for Google. Google explicitly says you do not need llms.txt or special AI markup to appear in generative Search features.

Limitations and exceptions

This framework does not claim that one surface “wins” forever. Buyer behavior changes by category: software buyers may lean more heavily on ChatGPT than local service buyers. Regulated niches may also need stricter review of what claims appear in AI answers.

If your Google generative AI inclusion is intentionally turned off, or if your commercial category rarely triggers AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity can become the better primary surface even when Search traffic is otherwise healthy.

No surface guarantees citations, leads, or revenue. Platforms describe eligibility and quality principles—not placement promises.
